COMMISSIONING OF TWO ALOE – VERA PROCESSING UNITS
Due to monkey menace prevalent in Kandi and lower Shivalik areas of the
division, the farmers use to refrain from growing any horticulture crops. To
overcome this problem, Aloe-vera plantation has been introduced being a
monkey repellent crop. It will also enable the farmers to put their waste land into
productive use by growing Aloe-vera which is a hardy crop and thrives well in
kandi Areas. In this connection, Department of Horticulture has successfully
commissioned two Aloe-vera Processing Units, one at Udhampur and other at
Kathua having a capacity of 01 MT each per day which are catering the needs of
the growers of the area to get their produce processed at nominal costs and also
to maintain the standards required for the proper marketing of products.
PROMOTION OF CASH CROP - STRAWBERRY PLANTATION
Most of the Horticulture plantation are having a long gestation period,
thereby Strawberry cultivation on commercial scales has been promoted in the
division, with enhanced incentives to the tune of Rs. 13000/- per kanal. It has
been successfully planted in an area of 723 kanals (36.15 hac) during the current
financial year which will prove to be a boon for the farmers towards the doubling
the farmers’ income.
ESTABLISHMENT OF DEMONSTRATION-PLOTS
With a view to bring small/marginal farmers in the ambit of Horticulture
Development and to extend the benefit of incentive to farmers having a land
holding of minimum 01 kanal, moreover to cover the peri-urban population, a
scheme for establishment of orchards of exotic varieties of different species like
Grapes, Papaya, Kiwi, Pomegranate, Dragon-fruit and Taiwan Guava have been
introduced with an incentive of Rs. 4000/ per kanal.
