WAY FORWARD
ESTABLISHMENT OF FARM SCHOOLS
Efforts are being made to establish Farmer to Farmer learning through
Farm Schools in outstanding farmers’ field. Such a land to land programme can
hasten the spread of skilled work in farming.
PERI–URBAN HORTICULTURE REVOLUTION
Urbanization in India is growing and the problem of food inflation largely
rises from the demand-supply gaps in urban areas. One way of stabilizing the
prices of vegetables and fruits in urban areas is to promote peri-urban
horticulture by providing the necessary technical and marketing support.
Considerable areas of land are available both within cities and near by areas and
they can be used to promote a peri-urban horticulture movement involving the
cultivation on roof tops and vacant land with fruit crops. This will confer a double
advantage-price stability on the one hand and sustainable nutrition security on
the other.
BIOTECHNOLOGY
Biotechnology, has the potential to increase productivity in fruit crops and
facilitate incorporation of genes for resistance to pests, diseases and abiotic
stresses and is set to play a critical role in fruit crops and livestock production by
enhancing yields, nutritional profile, stress tolerance and fruit crops protection. It
also helps in enhancing farmers’ profitability.
MOBILE APPS
Spreading horticulture related information to farmers has been made
easier by proliferation of mobile phones. Mobiles apps help to fulfill the larger
objective of farmers’ empowerment and facilitates in extension services which
can address the global food security issues.
